The 2nd Global Mental Health Summit 18 - 20 October 2011
In 2007, the Lancet medical journal published an influential series of articles on global mental health which called for action to scale up services for people with mental disorders on the twin principles of evidence and human rights. The Movement for Global Mental Health is a coalition of individuals and institutions committed to collective actions to achieve this goal. The Movement is open to anyone who shares this aspiration and has already over 1000 individual and 75 institutional members spanning all regions of the world and communities concerned with mental health. The Movement's first Summit, hosted by the WFMH in Athens in 2009, comprised sessions on scaling up services, human rights and planning strategies for the future. The sessions included keynotes from global health leaders, presentations from members and lively discussions on strategies to achieve our goals. The second Summit is likely to follow a similar pattern with an emphasis on a shared platform for professionals and persons affected by mental disorders, active participation of delegates in discussions and debates, and the launch of a new Lancet series on Global Mental Health.

The Movement for Global Mental Health is a coalition of individuals and institutions committed to collective actions to achieve the goals of scaling up services for people with mental disorders and promoting the human rights of people affected by mental disorders. The Movement is open to anyone who shares this aspiration (www.globalmentalhealth.org) and has already over 1500 individual and 80 institutional members spanning all regions of the world and communities concerned with mental health. In particular, people from both professional and non-professional background stand together, in solidarity, to promote the rights of people living with mental disorders to access evidence based care and live a life with dignity. You can read about the Movement in a recent article in the British Journal of Psychiatry.
The Movement's first Summit, hosted by the WFMH in Athens in 2009, comprised sessions on scaling up services, human rights and planning strategies for the future. The sessions included keynotes from global health leaders, presentations from members and lively discussions on strategies to achieve our goals (http://www.globalmentalhealth.org/articles.php?id=17&menu_id=0). This summit was extensively covered by the global media and won the BBC a prize for its reportage.
The second Summit follows a similar pattern with an emphasis on a shared platform for professionals and persons affected by mental disorders, active participation of delegates in discussions and debates, and the launch of a new Lancet series on Global Mental Health. Click here for an outline of the program which is being developed in a participatory process with all the members.
We look forwards to your participation and to welcoming you to our growing family!
